Lions

By Edwin, independent tour guide in Kenya

Lions copulate approximately 3000 times for every cub that survives to the yearling stage. Estrus typically lasts about 4 days during which couples copulate at the rate of 2-3 times per hour. Females are sexually mature from the age of four, males from the age of five. Gestation is 3.5 months, the typical litter numbers 3 cubs and the birth interval is 20-30 months if cubs survive (half of them die in the first year). Lion cubs are born tiny; 1-2 kg and are completely helpless. Their eyes open at 3-11 days, they can walk at 10-15 days and run at 25-30 days. They are weaned at 7-9 months and at 16 months they can feed by themselves. An adult male will weigh on average 200 kg, female 130 kg.
Thats a little about the largest African carnivore.
