THE HISTORY OF ZANZIBAR

Zanzibar is the main island found in the Tanzanian archipelago of Zanzibar. Zanzibar is semi autonomous region of Tanzania.

Zanzibar originated from two words ZANG a Persian word which means black and BAR  an Arabic word which means land. So Zanzibar is the coastal land of black people who speak swahili. Geographically is divided into 2 major regions, western and coastal region of south.

Western is a productive land where by two third of the population are farmers because of the productive land and a lot of rainfall. On the other side is coral land which is not fertile, most of the peoples are fishermen, but they have extremely beautiful sand beaches which are now turned on tourist areas.

DESCRIPTION OF POPULAR SITES (HISTORICALLY OR CULTURALLY)

  1. STONE TOWN; Its known as stone town because it was built up by using stones. It was built around 16th century to 18th century and this town is still exist until now. the former slave market was available in stone town and for now their is a statute which show how the slave market was practicing. but also there is house of wonder which was built in 1883 by the third sultan of Zanzibar and it was called house of wonder because it was the first building inside east African countries to have elevator, running water and electricity since 1883. but also there are old fort, old market but also sultan palace. Stone Town was declared a world heritage site since 2002 by UNESCO.
  2. PRISON ISLAND; There is a prison on that island which was built in 1874 but it was never used as a prison because there was a contagious disease happen around east africa so the government decide to use it as a quarantine place. But also inside the island is settlement for land giant tortoise, these tortoise are not indigenous to Zanzibar, they were shifted from Seychelles around 1800s, but they were only two, but for now there are more than 100 giant tortoise and these tortoise they can live up to 300 years and the oldest one now is 194 years.
  3. SPICE PLANTATIONS; Spices were brought to Zanzibar by arabs and they use slaves on their plantations, but until now we have those plantations and some of them are owned by government and others by private peoples. All types of major spices are available inside those plantations.
  4. JOZANI FOREST; This forest is famous for red collubus monkeys who are only available in  that forest in the world. But also there is a mangrove forest with different types of mangrove species.
  5. DOLPHINS WATCHING; One of the famous and beautiful place to visit, because tourists get chance to swim with dolphins in their normal life that means in the ocean.
  6. SAFARI BLUE; This is like an adventure because it will take you the whole day to visit different islands, lagoons and sand banks but also having lunch to those small islands.
  7. VILLAGE TOUR; This is like a documentary, because the clients will get chance to here the cultural way of life where by local people live, their families, economic activities, education and a lot of life experiences.
